SEW MUCH MORE HONORED AGAIN

quiltingThe world-famous Gateway Arch provided the perfect backdrop as hundreds of veteran Baby Lock retailers and a record number of new retailers from all over the United States attended the 20th annual Baby Lock convention – Baby Lock Tech 2009: The Baby Lock Revolution, August 29 – September 1, 2009, in St. Louis, MO. During the four-day event, retailers witnessed the unveiling of new, exclusive products like the Sashiko sewing machine which beautifully replicates the hand stitching first created centuries ago in Japan. New Baby Lock sergers like the Evolution and Enlighten with ExtraordinAir threading threads all loopers at once with the simple press of a button and Pure LED Lighting gives amazing visibility to the work surface. Both of these sergers have the exclusive Baby Lock Wave stitch and the Evolution, with its 8-thread capability, has 87 stitch combinations. Altogether 17 new and updated products were introduced at this year’s event.

Guest speakers at this year’s Opening Night included Tacony CEO, Kenneth J. Tacony, who told the retailers in his remarks, “For us, getting creative, being open to the world of changing technology, getting back to the basics and combining those with superior customer service, are the equation to our success in the future. By applying those same principles to your businesses, Baby Lock, its retailers and our customers will be happy for a long time to come.” Nancy Zieman, Baby Lock’s National Spokesperson and host of the PBS series Sewing with Nancy showed highlights of what is coming up in the 26th season.

As is customary, awards were presented to the Top Ten Single Location Retailers and the Top Ten Multiple Location Retailers in the USA and once again (for the sixth consecutive year) Sew Much More was honored to be one of those Top Ten Single Location Retailers. Pictured above, from left to right, are: Tacony CEO, Kenneth J. Tacony, Sew Much More owners, Ron & Barbara Goldkorn, Baby Lock President, Steven J. Jeffery, Sew Much More associates, Laura O’Connor & Mary Kay Schwartz.

MEET MARY MULARI Mary with Nancy Zieman
After years of searching for the right job, Mary Mulari discovered it at her fingertips. Always an avid sewer, Mary found her niche designing appliques, writing creative sewing books, and teaching. While attending a local craft festival in 1982, Mary recalls, “I noticed several decorated sweat shirts at the show and realized how valuable those soft, warm garments are in our wardrobes.” She experimented with sweatshirt decorations and began teaching a class on her discoveries for local community education. Since then, she has been teaching a class on her ideas at seminars around the United States and in Canada, and publishing books. Designer Sweatshirts, her first book, proved to be so successful that in 1984 Mary published a second book, Applique Design Collection (Both books out of print and no longer available). These were followed by seven other books. Each book features her own hand lettering and illustrations. Her decorating techniques now are presented on a variety of garments and accessories as well as sweatshirts. Mary has designed patterns for the McCall Pattern Company and embroidery cards collections for Husqvarna Viking, Cactus Punch, and Amazing Designs. Mary learned to sew as a member of the Loon Lake 4-H Club in Palo, Minnesota. She has a bachelor of science degree in English education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Her designs and writing have appeared in publications which include Notions, Creative Machine Embroidery, and Designs in Machine Embroidery. Mary appears frequently as a guest on the PBS television program Sewing with Nancy and also as a sewing specialist on Handmade by Design, Creative Living with Sheryl Borden, America Sews with Sue Hausmann, and Sew Perfect with Sandra Betzina. Mary continues to develop ideas for new publications, test products for the sewing industry, market her books, and present seminars. She has also designed fabric collections for Marcus Brothers Textiles.
